Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance along with the dreaded aspects of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a masterful acting turn in the role of Elisabeth, an aging actress reduced to starring in a fitness program on television. Pushed out by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a mysterious and terrifying process known as the Substance. This produces a youthful duplicate named Sue, resulting in an increasingly vampiric relationship between them. Friday 17 October, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This Agatha Christie-esque thriller stars Keira Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who takes a break from covering global conflict to board an opulent ship alongside a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her partner, plus additional extremely wealthy individuals. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Available now, Netflix
Presence
The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries with this nifty supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. As a family including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the camera – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The teen shows signs of aware of the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image via this autobiographical spoof. He plays an egotistical film star named Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4
This Creepy Thriller
The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a sequel. Set in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has made the youth on edge. When Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a basement, he anticipates a terrible outcome. However, the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers offering help, while the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, late evening, the Film4 channel
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who proclaims early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain achieves to depict the character with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, late night, the Film4 channel
Black Bag
The current week's another release by the same director is a espionage tale as tight as the polo necks worn by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is with uncovering a mole inside the organization from a group of five – among them is his spouse. The two stars are masters of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of fact versus fiction develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the intelligent intelligence fun. This Friday, various showings, Sky Cinema
